![]() ![]() A game that is a quiz as well might be another option. In education you might make some sort of geography game going from one place to another having to answer questions. I think collaboration is the way to go here don’t you think? This would be a great way for your students to come together and create something in a group project. The Stencyl tutorial suggest that you collaborate with others on line when you are creating your games. Have you considered looking at taking a game that was already made and looking at the hierarchy of how it was put together? You might find some ideas as to how one was created get some ideas on what you can do with your bingo game. I am glad you chose this flash technology even though you say you have no experience in gaming. I like Stencyl because it engages critical thinking skills. Until then, I’ll find a few games to play, too. I look forward to giving it a shot a bit further down the road, when I understand things a little better. I use a lot of technology, but I don’t know enough about design – yet – to make sense of what they offer. Each time I went back to the tutorial, I felt like I was reading a foreign language. When I tried to develop the bookshelf bingo game, I managed to upload a background, but I couldn’t figure the rest of it out. I attempted to manipulate one of the pre-existing kits, but I couldn’t make anything happen. For me, though, it was a bit overwhelming. It is also well-suited for people with little or no coding experience. Stencyl is a wonderful program for people with a basic understanding of gaming and/or the basic principles of game design. For the ones who are a little older and used to better graphics and more sophisticated designs, I think the simplicity and the old-school feel would appeal to them, especially when paired with the knowledge that their teachers designed the game for them. Each basic game seems to be fairly simple and would be very appropriate for use with students of most ages. Stencyl has a nice variety of kits available for those first games that any user might try. Again, I think this has more to do with me than the program. I couldn’t quite get my head around how to make the elements that are available for use work for me. I first attempted to make my own game, since I had the idea for a type of bookshelf bingo, and I thought it would be a really easy design. The kits come with all the general areas populated, but allows for a great deal of manipulation and customization. Users can create their own games, and even insert their own code if they like, or they can work on modifying one of the existing “kits” that is offered. One thing that I really like about Stencyl is that it provides options for users of varying skill levels. I tried, however, to try things out and make sense of the directions. I think that, rather than a flaw with this software, this is more reflective of my lack of knowledge in the world of gaming. I had trouble, however, following along with the terminology. Using their step-by-step guide, I was able to find everything they mentioned. Beyond here, though, I got more than a little lost.įirst, I followed the handy green bar to the “Crash Course” and attempted to become familiar with the program via the tutorial. There are also some sample games to try out before you get started building your own. ![]() They seem to be pretty good about responding to comments and questions, too. It is also where the support area is found. There is a handy green bar (not pictured) at the bottom of the first screen that links to the Stencylpedia, where a “Crash Course” is available before you get started. Getting into the program is pretty easy, too. The install was very simple (as are most, I’m noticing, on the MacBook Pro). There are a variety of Pro additions, too, available for a fee (with discounts for students), but as I am experimenting, I’m sticking with the free download. Stencyl 2.0 is a free program, available for Windows and Mac. I am one of those people, so I decided to take it for a test drive. It’s a game that allows for an easier way of building iOS and Flash Games – one for people who don’t code. Instead, what I found was even more intriguing. I’ve been looking for something that I can use to make awesome info-graphics (with less of a learning curve than the Adobe tools that I have at my disposal). I thought it would something related to art or drawing. The first app listed that really caught my attention and held it was one called Stencyl. When I went looking for a new tool to write about for thi assignment, I turned to Go2Web20. ![]()
